A published paper or a well-documented independent research project signals that you can formulate questions, design experiments, and think critically, skills that no amount of LeetCode grinding can demonstrate.
5. Don't underestimate communication and ethics
The students who will lead AI development aren't just technically brilliant, they're the ones who can explain a model's limitations to a hospital administrator, write a policy brief about algorithmic fairness, or present research findings to a non-technical audience. As AI becomes embedded in every industry, the ability to bridge technical and human worlds becomes your most valuable skill.
